Being part of this project is already having a very positive impact not only on my teaching strategies, but also on the results upon my students and the way they reflect about the world they live in.
Using an activity from our mobility in Palermo, I encouraged my students to think about the true cost of fast fashion, as well as its impact on the planet's environment.
The True Cost (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxhCpLzreCw&t=1285s) is a story about clothing, about the clothes we wear, about the people who make these clothes and the impact that it is having on our world. It is a story about greed and fear, power and poverty.
After watching the documentary, which is a wake-up call towards the real implications of the fast fashion industry, the students were asked to reflect and write a colaborative opinion text on the topic.
All students had lots of interesting ideas and opinions to share. Most of them said they were extremely shocked with all that relates to the fast fashion industry and they were thankful for this task, as they had never thought about it before.
What is more interesting, and which shows that this was a very productive activity, is that the majority of the students said they are willing to change their buying habits in order to fight against this highly profitable and exploitative business model.
The link to the video, as well as the lesson plan, was shared with all the other 11th grade teachers, so that they can also keep this reflection wave spreading among their students!
Hopefully, this way we will all contribute to minimize the consequences of fast fashion.
